Advice and feedback from an artist, for the artists!
Q: What was your knowledge of tagging before starting with TeePublic?
A: We need tagging! Through tags, people try to find what they want and we want our designs to be found.
Q: Have you watched our Tagging 101 video and what information did you gather from it?
A: Yes, watching the Tagging 101 video really helped! I found out that it's better not to use overlapping tags, like cat and cats.
Q: In your opinion, how has tagging impacted your sales on TeePublic?
A: I used to think people were buying my work through my SNS promotions, but the people who don’t know or follow me are only using tags to find my work. Tags lead to sales of course, and even if it doesn't necessarily lead to sales, people who don't know me can find me through tags.
Q: How much time do you put into tagging each design?
A: Finding the right tags can take 30 seconds to 5 minutes. The subject I draw is quite limited (mostly fish and marine life), so the tags I use are usually very similar. I try to fill in all 15 of them!
Q: Do you have a specific design that you were having trouble tagging? How did you figure out the right tags?
A: Sometimes I get into trouble when I draw pictures of themes that I don't usually draw. In that case, I search through dictionaries or Wikipedia and get hints of keywords.
Q: What are some of your most commonly used tags for your designs?
A: I use the tag 'cute' often. Well, I was a little shy to say that my paintings were cute. So I never used them before, but now I do. It's a very popular keyword that so many people search for. If people say your picture is cute, don't hesitate to tag it!
Q: Do you have a holiday plan to review your tags? If so, any tips/pointers you're willing to share?
A: I'm preparing some Christmas paintings for the holidays… I will plan to use additional tags like: "christmas," "seasons greetings," "holiday" and "xmas" for my new and existing designs. According to the contents of the design, we can also use tags like "santa," "ornaments," and "ugly sweater." Sometimes, when I don't know what to tag I search for relevant hashtags on Google, and it can be very easy to find tags that way.
